Naples, Italy. Caring for cultural heritage means caring for people.
The Rione Sanità is one of the most ancient districts in Naples, boasting a rich cultural heritage. This includes catacombs from the Hellenistic and Christian eras, including two which still exist: the San Gennaro and San Gaudiso catacombs.
After years of neglect, the catacombs, which are private property of the Vatican, were entrusted to La Paranza social cooperative and reopened to the public. It is a story of a transformation from degradation to the recovery of a remarkable, hidden heritage. Through heritage, the cooperative empowered young people, created a safer environment in the Rione Sanità and revitalised the entire district.
